      2 cups all-purpose flour
      1 beaten egg
      2 cups brown sugar
      1 teaspoon soda
      1/2 cup shortening
      1 pinch baking powder
      1 cup sour milk


    Crumble shortening into sugar and flour. Reserve 3/4 cup of the mixture for topping.  Add shortening, milk and egg to the remaining dry ingredients. Mix well and place in deep,  8" square baking dish. Cover with the reserved crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for 40  minutes or until done.
